“So, how many babies have you caught since you became a doula?”
I get that question, A LOT.
The answer to that question is, I HAVEN’T CAUGHT ANY!
Doulas are not midwives or doctors. We DO NOT catch babies. We do not do anything medical. No, we don’t take your blood pressure and we certainly don’t do cervical checks! And we definitely do not deliver babies! We do not diagnose or give medical advice either.
“Well, then what do you do?”
We do a lot of things! I have been trained and experienced in childbirth. My goal is to help you have the safe and satisfying childbirth that YOU want. I provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support. What does that mean, you ask? Physically, I help with comfort measures for the woman in labor. This may include things such as massage, counter pressure, help with breathing, help with moving and positioning, providing you with warm or cool packs and other comforting gestures. Emotionally, I am there to reassure you that certain things you are experiencing are normal and things such as that. Information wise, I assist you and your partner with information throughout the course of labor and your options. Perhaps the doctor suggests a certain intervention to speed things up, for example. I make sure you understand the procedure, why the doctor wants to do it, and let you decide if this is something you want or feel is necessary.
There is so much more that we do but, honestly, it’s hard to put into words. But, the purpose of this blog was to inform you that no, we don’t catch your baby or do anything clinical/medical.
